Welcome to the ICTA UAB 3rd Summer School and Workshop on Environmental Conflicts and Justice
(2-11 July 2012)
The increase in the flows of energy and materials together with climate and ecological changes are exacerbating conflicts over access to environmental resources and are also creating new waste disposal conflicts. Understanding the causes of conflicts requires a multi-disciplinary approach. The third Summer School on Environmental Conflicts and Justice brings together some of Europe´s and North America's leading academics in the politics, ecology, and economics of environmental conflicts to teach the next generation of researchers on these issues. This year, the school is made of a course a workshop.
The course will be held at the premises of ICTA, UAB in Barcelona from July 2-11 2012. It is organized and coordinated by the Eco2BCN group (www.eco2bcn.es) of the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (icta.uab.cat) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Enrolled students will receive specialized theoretical, methodological, and empirical lectures from expert researchers in complementary fields and will also be able to engage in discussions and debates with them and with each other.
Geared at the master or doctoral level mainly for students working or intending to work on environmental conflicts, this course will require an exam as well as the write-up of an essay on an environmental conflict at the end of the course. It is divided into three parts: a first introductory section on theoretical underpinnings of environmental justice and conflicts, a second section discussing mechanisms and processes to address and redress environmental injustice, and a third section presenting and discussing cases and dimensions of environmental conflicts (including climate justice, hydric justice, mining, oil and biomass extraction conflicts, urban conflicts, and waste disposal conflicts).
Enrolled students will also participate in a two-day workshop on environmental conflicts and justice in which keynote speakers will present their latest work and discuss recent and future research on environmental justice and conflicts. The workshop will be held at the Pedrera, a building designed by the Catalan Architect Antoni Gaudí in the Eixample district of Barcelona.
In this website you can find a detailed programme for the course and workshop as well as information about the participants (professors and researchers) and their research projects. This website is also intended to work as a teaching tool for those who do not have the chance to participate in the school but want to learn more about the study of environmental conflicts. You can access here materials and presentations from previous summer schools (2010 and 2011). We will update the website during and after the summer school to keep it as an open and permanent resource.
